"Valley WR suspended for missing practice" Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; Monday, November 6, 2006
Exactly one week after announcing his verbal commitment to the University of Michigan, Valley star reciever Toney Clemons was trying to explain why he was suspended from the team's final game of the season. Clemons, a senior who is ranked among the top 20 recievers in the country by some scouting services, did not attend Valley's game Friday at Brentwood in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs. Valley lost, 30-0. Clemons said he and teammate Anthony Saunders were suspended by Valley coach Troy Hill because they came to practice late Thursday. Clemons said he and Saunders weren't going to attend practice at all until they learned from another teammmate that they would probably be suspended for the game the following day if they didn't show. Clemons said he and Saunders were going to skip the entire practice because they wanted to attend the IUP-Slippery Rock college game Thurday night. Saunders brother A.J. plays for Slippery Rock and Clemons said he is a close friend of IUP running back Chris Morgan. When asked what would make him think it would be OK to skip practice the day before a playoff game, Clemons said: "It was just a walk-through [practice]. We knew our assignments. We thought we could get a little pass. It was a short walk-through anyway. We went to practices all week and all season. We didn't think they'd mind too much."
"Where's the equipment?" Source: Russ Geary - HSFOOTBALLWEB
I've got a good one, just got to find the newspaper clipping from 1986. But this is a true story and here it is: I was a Jr. High School coach at the time, out scouting our potential playoff opponent while this happened. After the game we were scouting was over, we raced back to our stadium to find out who won the game. I can still picture Varsity Assistant coach Ed Ghetian sitting in the football office when we got back saying: "You'll never believe what happened here tonight..."
An end of the regular season game for the conference championship between South Allegheny and Wilkinsburg took a wild and unusual turn....before the game ever started! The game was scheduled to be played on a Friday night, in Glassport, at South Allegheny's home field. The South Allegheny team was there. The Wilkinsburg team was there. The stadium was packed. But the Wilkinsburg players had no equipment! Seems their equipment truck driver got a flat tire on the way to the game. After a delay in getting the tire fixed, he decided to drive it back to Wilkinsburg, park it, and go home...without telling anyone! So there was a packed stadium, one team dressed and on the field, the referees ready for the game....and the other team standing in street clothes on their sideline. The WPIAL, the governing body for Western PA high school sports, ended up cancelling the game and had it rescheduled for the next night. South Allegheny ended up winning the championship the next night, physically pounding the "now-equipped" Wilkinsburg team.
