PARKERSBURG - Mosquitoes breeding in a drainage pond at Parkersburg High School are causing a problem in the neighborhood, a resident said.
The retention system was installed about two years ago with the multimillion-dollar renovation of the high school to catch storm runoff and to prevent it from going into the new gymnasium and adjacent properties.

Both centers will offer school choice again this year under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation.

PARKERSBURG - Though few students report using drugs and alcohol at schools, youth substance abuse is still an issue in Wood County.
Officials with Wood County Schools reviewed results Tuesday evening from the 2008-09 P.R.I.D.E. survey, which was distributed this year to more than 3,800 students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 in both the district's public schools and three private schools.

PARKERSBURG - An inspection around Parkersburg High School Tuesday found no mosquito problem, a health officer with the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department said.

PARKERSBURG - Officials will strengthen rules governing cell phones in schools after the Wood County Board of Education voted down a revised version of the policy.
The board Tuesday voted 4-1 against a revised Policy 5114.11: Communication/Electronic Devices Tuesday, with board member Jim Fox voting for the policy.

PARKERSBURG -A downtown bicycle/walking trail will be extended to the city limits thanks to a state grant.
The city has received a $180,000 grant from the West Virginia Department of Highways to construct a portion of the Little Kanawha connector trail. The biking/walking trail will run about a mile and half from the Salvation Army to Corning Park.

PARKERSBURG - In 1989 Wood County Schools passed a nearly $10 million bond to replace roofs on all of the district's schools.
Now, 20 years later, the district again is looking at roof replacements for its 27 schools and how best to pay for the work.
Lawrence Hasbargen, assistant superintendent of maintenance and facilities, said the district typically does roof replacements every 20-25 years.

GLENVILLE -An 8-year-old boy collapsed Monday during youth league football practice in Gilmer County and died Tuesday, officials said.
Details of the incident were unavailable, however, the boy was identified as Tyler Maxwell who died at Women and Children's Hospital in Charleston on Tuesday, a spokesman said.

WASHINGTON - Ohio and West Virginia's U.S. senators Thursday voted to confirm the first Hispanic woman to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Sens. Robert C. Byrd and Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, both Democrats, were among the 68 senators who voted to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor of New York to the high court. Thirty-one senators, mostly Republicans, voted against with one senator not voting.

Steve Daugherty was listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon at Ruby Memorial Hospital where he underwent brain surgery on Tuesday, a spokesman sai.

PARKERSBURG - Wood County Schools has seen a gradual increase in students taking Advanced Placement classes over the last several years due in part to weighted grades.
According to a quarterly snapshot of school district statistics, 1,373 of the district's more than 13,000 students took Advanced Placement classes last year, with many taking more than one course during a semester or school year.

PARKERSBURG - Lonnie Wayne Moore Sr., a former Wood County Schools computer technician, pleaded guilty Friday to two felony counts in Wood County Circuit Court.
Moore, 46, pleaded guilty to charges of possessing material depicting a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct and incest. Judge Robert Waters set a hearing to rule on the plea and possible sentencing for 11:30 a.m. Nov. 20.

ST. MARYS - St. Marys Police Department is looking for a man they believe tried to abduct a young boy early Wednesday evening.
At around 6:35 p.m., police were alerted to a possible attempted abduction on Washington Street close to St. Marys Elementary School, police Chief Bill Stull said.
Children were playing on the school playground when a 10-year-old boy was leaving on his bike.
