Tony Bell was named varsity girls basketball coach at Mount Hebron on Monday, replacing Scott Robinson , who resigned as coach last spring. Bell teaches special education at Mount Hebron. In recent years, he has been a track coach there and has led his teams to three Howard County titles. He was the junior varsity girls basketball coach at Howard for three years and coached the varsity in 2004-05.

Joseph Blackwell, Arundel, football In his first game as a Wildcat, Blackwell gained 257 yards and scored four touchdowns as No. 3 Arundel defeated Anne Arundel County foe and No. 6 Old Mill, 34-27. Blackwell, a running back who transferred last winter from Archbishop Spalding, carried the ball 28 times for 174 yards and one touchdown and caught five passes for 83 yards and three touchdowns. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound junior, who hopes to play Division I Football Bowl Subdivision college football, has a 3.8 grade-point average and is considering a pre-med major.

As the second half of Tuesday's boys soccer game between perennial state powers Fallston and visiting River Hill wore on, it became more and more apparent that a deciding goal would have to be earned through hard work and making the most of an opportunity.

Kirsten Frank, Archbishop Spalding, soccer The senior sweeper, a four-year starter and first-team All-Metro selection, was the defensive catalyst in leading the No. 1 Cavaliers to two shutout wins in last weekend's Pioneer Shootout at Anne Arundel Community College. The defending Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference champions opened their season with a 3-0 win over No. 8 Severna Park on Friday and then defeated No. 6 South River, 1-0, in overtime Saturday. Frank disrupted both teams' offenses with tenacity, smarts and poise. Frank is set to play at Ohio University next year.

Geaton Caltabiano scored the tying goal from 20 yards out with five minutes left to play for the No. 2 Mount St. Joseph soccer team as the visiting Gaels and No. 12 Gilman played to a 3-3 draw. Mount St. Joseph led 2-0 after 15 minutes before the Greyhounds' Joe Cahalan answered. "St. Joe really took the game to us in the first half," Gilman coach Jon Feal said. "We built off the last five minutes of the first half and carried that momentum into the second." Gilman's Cotter Brown and Diego McQuestion scored the tying and go-ahead goals as the Greyhounds took a 3-2 lead with 18 minutes left. ... Lucas Winters scored two goals and Mamadou Kansaye had three assists to power No. 1 McDonogh (7-0) to a 5-0 win over visiting Loch Raven (1-2-1). Matt Sanchez had two saves for his sixth shutout in seven games.
