Perhaps nobody at Lapel High School understands the enormous task ahead of the Bulldogs better than football coach Nate Andrews. The good news is he’s also perhaps the person most equipped to deal with the challenge. Lapel officially joins the Indiana Crossroads Conference this fall after the White River Athletic Conference dissolved.
Recently I had a chance to sit down and interview Jim Carter. Carter was the football coach at Anderson High School from 1951 to 1964 and was also the golf coach there. What began as a defensive battle quickly slipped into an offensive lull for the Madison County Pirates, who saw their Alumni Homecoming game spoiled 14-2 on Saturday night by the two-time Midwest Football League defending champion Adams County Patriots.

Two words dominate the dry-erase board in Lapel’s football locker room: Do work. More than a simple command, it’s a philosophy. And it’s best personified by senior running back Shelby Weeks, a throwback bruiser built in the Larry Csonka mode. “Our motto’s ‘Do work,’” Weeks said, pointing at the white board in the front of the room.
Change has always been and will be a constant in the universe. And for the Alexandria football team, they’re hoping the change of a new head coach will lead to a change against an unfortunate recent trend.

James Main doesn’t hesitate when stating his goal for Pendleton Heights’ 2009 football season. “Win every game, of course,” the senior linebacker said. That’s a lofty aim for a team coming off three wins in the past two seasons combined.
Despite finishing just above .500 last season, the Madison-Grant Argylls football team took a lot away from a successful 2008 campaign. In just his first season as the Madison-Grant football coach, Beau Engle successfully led the team to its second sectional title in school history, yet he said there is still a bitter taste in many players’ mouths after a 7-6 campaign last season.

Big game: The Aug. 28 showdown with rival Lapel could give the Eagles an early indication of how far they’ve come. The Bulldogs won last year’s battle 26-7.

ANDERSON — As Highland’s football team slowly emerged from a cover of fog after a recent morning practice, the symbolism was hard to miss. Five winning seasons in the past six years have given the Scots ample credibility. But a host of graduation losses after back-to-back 7-3 seasons has left the immediate future clouded.
Madison-Grant ArgyllsCoach: Beau Engle (7-6, second year)2008: 7-6, sectional champion, lost to Jimtown in regional
“Is it 25 years?” Otis Cress asked. “I guess it is.” The coach, whose name adorns the field on which the Eagles play their home games, has plenty of other business on his mind following a highly uncharacteristic 1-9 campaign.
Coach: Otis Cress (164-93, 25th year)2008: 1-9 lost to Madison-Grant in sectionalSectional: 2A-28 (Alexandria, Delphi, Elwood, Lewis Cass, Northwestern, Taylor, Tipton)Returning starters: 8 offense, 6 defense
Some things have changed for the Anderson Indians football team, while others remain the same.
Quick facts about Anderson football.
A brief look at the five key areas for Anderson football.
Big game: The Raiders face Lapel on Sept. 18. The Bulldogs received votes in first Class A poll of the season and are a former WRAC rival. It will be a good early test. Top returner: Shenandoah will need their playmakers Zach York and Zach Cole to step up and make plays for the Raiders.
MIDDLETOWN — What will keep a high school football coach up at night? Aside from the anticipation of a new season beginning, it’s figuring out who will fill the losses from graduation. At Shenandoah, the Raiders will be looking to fill a pair of voids on the offensive side of the football.
Coach: Scott Widener 9-2 in second year at Shenandoah; 9-12 overall in third year.2008: 9-2; lost to Heritage Christian in second round of sectional 31-14.Sectional: 2A-29 (Centerville, Heritage Christian, Indianapolis Ritter, Indianapolis Washington, Park Tudor, Shenandoah, Speedway, Union County)
One game into the regular season, and Frankton High School football is still waiting to put its first points on the board after a 35-0 defeat Friday night to Kokomo Northwestern.
It’s finally football season. High school football season, that is. We’ve all seen and — hopefully — read the previews on the area’s nine high school football teams the last nine days in The Herald Bulletin. We’ve assimilated all the info in the capsules and the Take 5 quick hits as well.
Week 1 of the high school football season is in the books, and we’re left with many more questions than answers.
The Highland High School athletic administration is in the process of investigating reports of the Scots’ football team using an ineligible player during last week’s season-opening win against city rival Anderson.
No offense to the 2008 Tennessee Titans, but the Pendleton Heights football team may have found their version of “Thunder and Lightning.”

We’ve been told life is a journey, not a destination in many ways.
We’ve been told life is a journey, not a destination in many ways. It’s been said in song, literature, motion pictures and from one generation to the next as long as there has been a “current” generation to listen to the “previous” generation.
After losing the starting quarterback, leading wide receiver and almost the entire offensive line — oh, and that is without mentioning the departure of Ball State’s former coach Brady Hoke — one would think the Cardinals football team is in a transition year.
Don’t be fooled by a fancy haircut or a flashy pair of football shoes.
Heritage Christian quarterback Jackson Kirtley very well may be the best football player to step on a field in Madison County this season.
On-the-job training did not bode well for the inexperienced Ball State football team Thursday night, bringing a halt to the nation’s longest regular season win-streak after the Cardinals fell 20-10 to visiting North Texas.
For most of the Madison-Grant-Blackford football game on Friday night in Fairmount, the only question was whether the Argylls would finish with more penalty yards than total offense for the Bruins.
The Kokomo Wildkats came to Anderson and dominated the Indians for four quarters of high school football Friday night, walking out of Collier Field with a 69-6 victory.
Where do you start when trying to establish the identity of a football team? If you’re the Lapel Bulldogs, you start with the big guys up front. Two years ago, Lapel coach Nate Andrews thought there was the potential for a special group of linemen that could suit up for the Bulldogs. Lapel has a luxury with the depth at its offensive line and the overall size of the line.
Ball State football coach Stan Parrish admitted after his team’s 0-2 start how amazed he was to see his team still alive late in Saturday night’s 23-16 loss to Division I-AA opponent New Hampshire
Nobody would envy the start to Anderson University’s 2009 football season.

When Elwood’s Trevor Ozenbaugh takes the field with the first-team defense Friday night, he might need name tags to identify all of his new teammates.

As Highland’s football team slowly emerged from a cover of fog after a recent morning practice, the symbolism was hard to miss.
Don’t expect to hear much from Frankton coach Otis Smith touting his silver anniversary at the school this year.

Kokomo Tribune; Kokomo, Indiana--Sports
GREENTOWN — Eastern football coach Josh Edwards came into the season with an optimistic outlook following a rebuilding project that offered signs of promise, but just one win over the last two seasons.
Braxton Shelton may have been a little shocked by his record-setting performance Friday night at Walter Cross Field but it isn’t likely anyone wearing Mount Vernon colors was the least bit surprised.
RUSSIAVILLE — Frankfort needed two things Friday night to spoil Western’s home opener — a tough defense and Korben Shirar.
ROYAL CENTER — The Lewis Cass football team has built a reputation for tough, physical play in the trenches, usually pounding opponents into submission by game’s end with running play after running play and a bevy of backs.
TIPTON — The first game of a high school football season is expected to be a little sloppy, but Friday night’s game between Tipton and Hamilton Heights went way over the top.
Eastern High School all-state football player Rob Patchett had lofty aspirations when he left Greentown in the summer of 1985. The plan included living in New York City and being a somebody wearing expensive suits — living the high life.
Lewis Cass’ football players had to deal with an unfamiliar feeling last week. Pioneer beat Cass 21-14 in a matchup of small-school powers, giving the Kings their first Week 1 loss since 2002.
In a mid-week conversation, Indianapolis Arlington coach Rob Patchett said the best thing that could happen to his team Friday night at Walter Cross Field was to get an early lead and make Kokomo do some things it didn’t really want to do.It took just 15 seconds for that hope to die.
Big plays equal a big win — that was the theme for Taylor Friday night. The Titans used an explosive ground game and a pouncing defense to record three touchdowns of 30-plus yards between the two units, running away with a 48-12 win over Tri-Central in the process.
DENVER — For the second week in a row to start the 2009 campaign, the Northwestern football team went on the road and dismantled its opponent, this time a 42-0 whitewash of North Miami here Friday.
ELWOOD — Tipton’s special teams turned in a special performance, igniting the Blue Devils to a 49-7 victory over Elwood in Friday night’s high school football game at Panther Stadium.
BUNKER HILL — The Maconaquah football field was glowing here Friday night as the Braves finally got the monkey off their backs by defeating Mississinewa 19-16 in overtime.
24 power — Kokomo football fans have seen this play dozens, perhaps even hundreds of times.
Northwestern carved up Frankton and North Miami by a combined score of 77-0 in the first two weeks of the high school football season.
WALTON — Lewis Cass’ football team let fourth-quarter leads slip away in non-conference losses to Pioneer and West Lafayette, leaving the Kings with their first 0-2 start since 1998.
MARION — After exchanging blows toe to toe with Marion for two-plus quarters at Dick Lootens Stadium, the Kokomo football team erupted for 35 unanswered second-half points to bury the Giants under a 70-25, record-shattering avalanche Friday.
RUSSIAVILLE — Western’s football team was frustrated entering this week starting the season with a pair of losses. The team and the coaching staff did some soul searching over the week to find the solutions.
ARCADIA — The Maconaquah-Hamilton Heights football series had been lopsided since it began in 2000. The Huskies held an almost 400-point differential in nine blowouts, but Friday night was a sign the Braves are closing the gap little by little.
So appreciated a spectacle is college football that we boisterously applaud its arrival regardless of how the first wave of games plays out. Great matchups, mediocre matchups, doesn’t matter. What does is that there is tackling, tailgating and a halftime tuba section, and not necessarily in that order.
It’s been only five years since Kokomo’s football program hit rock bottom.
Northwestern quarterback Trevor Gibson made his delayed season debut one to remember. The Tiger senior completed 8 of 13 pass attempts for 293 yards and four touchdowns to lead Northwestern past Western 48-46 in a wildly entertaining game Friday night.
BUNKER HILL — The milestones keep piling up for the Eastern football team, which defeated Maconaquah 28-7 here Friday to improve to 2-0 in the Mid-Indiana Conference and 3-1 overall.
ANDERSON — Kokomo scorched Marion for 70 points last week and while the Wildkats didn’t quite match that total here Friday night, the 69-6 thumping they handed Anderson was still pretty convincing.
WALTON — As Lewis Cass coach Scott Mannering reflected on his team’s 21-20 loss to Hamilton Heights Friday night, a lot of moments weighed on his mind as he absorbed the loss.
PERU — It had been three years since Peru had hung any offense on Taylor, suffering a trio of shutouts at the hands of the Titans dating back to 2006.
RENSSELAER — Near-perfect execution for an excellent game plan had Tipton’s football squad pulling off a Hoosier Conference upset here Friday night.
Tri-Central’s football miseries continued here Friday when they ran into a Clinton Prairie squad that had too much speed and too many horses.

MUNCIE -- Ball State's football team, which features loads of inexperience with 27 of 44 players in the two-deep roster being freshmen or sophomores, has zeroed in the past week on the small details it might need to execute in its first game.

MUNCIE -- The curtain might not fall at the end of this season on the college football career of Ball State tailback Quale Lewis. An encore season for one of the best single-season rushers in Mid-American Conference history might be in store in 2010.

Sometimes an all-star contest simply boils down to star power, and that seemed to be the difference Saturday evening at Terre Haute South as the North All-Stars defeated their South counterparts 32-16 in the fifth annual Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star game.
Northview football player Anthony Hubbard’s road to his senior season has included several interesting twists and turns, but his hard work has made him a key for the Knights heading into the 2009 season. Hubbard went out for football as a sophomore after getting just a taste of the sport as a 7th-grader.
A shaky offensive start left West Vigo on the short end of the statistics Friday night in the Vikings preseason high school football scrimmage at Seeger.
High school football goes on display tonight when most teams in the Wabash Valley participate in controlled scrimmages to wrap up the last week of practice before next Friday’s regular-season openers.
A lot of the players on this year’s West Vigo High School football team played well in complementary roles last season as the Vikings enjoyed an 8-3 season. Whether that’s the good news or the bad news will be determined the next few weeks.
Northview has been one of the Wabash Valley’s best football teams in the last five years. The Knights’ win-loss records since 2004 prove it. 9-2, 7-3, 8-1, 6-4, 4-6. The 4-6 came last season, and along with it came three Western Indiana Conference losses. For a football program that believes it should enter each season as the WIC favorite, or at the very least, a WIC contender, the losing season sticks in the craw of coach George Gettle and his players.
The Western Indiana Conference has always been an incongruent mix of odds and ends. Geographically, it runs the gamut from the mining and farming community of Sullivan, to the resort town of Nashville (where Brown County is located), to the pharmaceutical and river city of Clinton (home of South Vermillion) … with all points in between.
To say Turkey Run’s football program is going through a rough patch in recent years … well, you’d be right. The numbers are not encouraging. To wit, the Warriors are 1-39 the last four seasons. … they snapped a 28-game losing streak with its lone win in 2007. … they are currently riding a 12-game losing streak. … and they have not won a home game since the 2004 season.

Terre Haute South’s football team learned the hard way why opportunities left on the table in the first half can burn a team for the rest of a game.
Trailing 8-0 after the first quarter, Northview executed a 60-yard quick kick from its own five-yard line on third down that helped change the
It was the threat of lightning that caused the high school football game between Terre Haute North and visiting Castle to go well into the night Friday, but the offensive units of both teams — particularly the Patriots — brought the thunder.
Union gained a tie in its football series with Sullivan County rival North Central on Friday, defeating the Thunderbirds 12-0 in the season opener for both teams.
Whether it was the fumble on the opening kickoff that set up a touchdown, or the two North Vermillion scores in the last 2:35 of the first half, or the many big plays by the visiting Falcons, Saturday night’s high school football opener was pretty much what coach Steve Stewart of Turkey Run expected.
Marshall football has been unable to bring home a Little Illini Conference football title since 2002, when the Lions beat arch-rival Casey in the season opener. Casey has won five of the last six LIC titles, and the Warriors are coming off one of the best year’s in school history in 2008.
South Vermillion scored on its first five possessions to defeat North Vermillion in nonconference football Friday night 48-8.
They collectively cleaned up their act in the second half, rolling up 394 yards rushing overall, to throttle Marshall 28-7 in the regular season and Little Illini Conference high school football opener for both teams.
Terre Haute South obviously wasn’t running at the speed of light on offense early in the first quarter, but it sure must have seemed like it to an inexperienced Vincennes Lincoln football team.
Despite trailing virtually the entire first half and giving up five touchdowns in the first 18 minutes of the game, host Northview put together nine good third-quarter minutes and threatened to wrest a high school football game away from visiting Terre Haute North on Friday.
South Putnam dedicated its football field to Indiana Football Hall of Fame coach Mark Wildman in pre-game ceremonies, then the Class 2A No. 10-ranked Eagles defeated Class A No. 2-ranked Rockville on Mark Wildman Field by a score of 34-6.
Sullivan and North Knox hooked up in a high school football shootout Friday night at Sportland Field with the Golden Arrows scoring first and last in a 47-27 victory.
The Northview Knights got off to a fast start and overcame their own errors and the host Sullivan Golden Arrows 62-30 in Western Indiana Conference high school football on Friday night.
South Vermillion set a school scoring record in football Friday night, defeating Brown County 59-12 in Western Indiana Conference action.
Terre Haute South’s football team had four possessions that started and ended in the first quarter.
If there have been a more productive 37 seconds by a single player in high school football this year, it would be surprising.
