Tommy Kaulukukui was third yesterday with 213 votes for greatest University of Hawaii football player ever. There may be that many people left alive who saw him play for UH in the mid-1930s, but I don't think they're all participating in the fan balloting for the Centurions project.
Normally, the bottom line is about money.

In this case, though, the ultimate bottom line is Hawaii's youth.

One of the state's top high school basketball players is en route to SMU — to play football.
SALT LAKE CITY » With the University of Hawaii facing a steep budget deficit, Warriors football coach Greg McMackin said he's willing to accept a cut in pay.
In the hours after the Hawaii football coach used a gay slur during a press conference at the Western Athletic Conference Football Preview, news of his remarks and subsequent apologies spread swiftly across the country and drew strong reactions back home.
Greg McMackin can see where the voters are coming from. But while the coaches and media members around the Western Athletic Conference picked Hawaii fifth in the preseason football polls, the second-year head coach views the Warriors' prospects for the coming season from a slightly different perspective.
With belts tightening around the Western Athletic Conference, among the topics raised at the WAC Football Preview yesterday were inquiries by Fresno State and San Jose State about playing their games at Hawaii earlier in the day as a way to save money.
Less than a week before the start of fall camp, the Hawaii football coaching staff will have to call an early audible.
There are sedate Mondays.

Then there are Waianae Mondays, as in the first day of school plus the first practice in full pads for the Seariders football team.

The accommodations aren't exactly luxurious. But those who've experienced fall camps with the Hawaii football team appreciate the benefits of the setup.
Hawaii football coach Greg McMackin was reprimanded by the Western Athletic Conference yesterday for his controversial comments during the league's media preview last week.
The Hawaii football, women's volleyball and men's basketball teams had better be ready for their close-ups.
If Darren Hernandez had his way, there would be no Hurricane tracker.

The Kapolei football coach would like nothing better than some anonymity for his team. He was quite surprised to learn that the Hurricanes are ranked No. 7 in the Star-Bulletin Preseason Football Top 10.

On the first day of practice, the Hawaii football team went back to page one. "We're going right back to the basics," Hawaii head coach Greg McMackin said yesterday after the Warriors' first practice of fall camp.
Corey Paredes and Richard Torres shared living space and a common goal.

Paredes and Torres were roommates in an off-campus apartment last year, keenly aware of each other's struggles in meeting the demands of school and football while dealing with the financial burdens walk-ons must bear.

Their time is coming — quickly.

Haku Correa and Geordon Hanohano were introduced to college football last fall by taking on Hawaii's starting offensive line in practices. This season, they're preparing to extend their action to Saturday nights.

Bryant Moniz's orange practice jersey looks somewhat out of place among the green and white shirts. But the backup quarterback is enjoying being part of special teams drills as the coaches evaluate which players will serve on the kick coverage and return units.
When you first started playing bitty football with someone on the playground during elementary school recesses and have been playing organized football together since the sixth grade, then you're bound to have an ingrained understanding of what he's going to do on the field.
Kealoha Pilares wasn't a big fan of the weight room in high school. It didn't take long for his outlook to change once he got to college. "The first practice, seeing all these big guys," Pilares said. "I told myself I have to get better, just have to put some muscle on these bones."
The more things change, as they say, the more they stay the same. Take the spread formation popularized locally by former University of Hawaii football assistant coach Paul Johnson.
If there was a Hawaii high school fantasy football league, P.J. Minaya probably would be snapped up in the first few picks in the draft.
J.B. Fontenot threw two touchdown passes to lead host Radford past Anuenue 35-0 in the OIA White football opener for both teams last night.
Classes begin this morning on the Manoa campus, and so does the next phase of the Hawaii football team's preparation.
When rough economic times hit, Derek Dooley kept his cool.

Doubling as athletic director and head football coach at Louisiana Tech, Dooley didn't slash the budget in the wake of the downturn. Instead, the department moved forward with several projects aimed at enhancing the program.

Pat Hill knows his scheduling philosophy can present pitfalls at times.

But a shot at the big payoff outweighs such concerns for the Fresno State football coach.

TORONTO » It was about a year-and-a-half ago when Hawaii football star Ryan Grice-Mullins decided to skip his senior season and enter the NFL Draft, expecting to easily step into a comfortable life as a professional athlete.
Twenty-one losses in two seasons have done little to dull Robb Akey's exuberance for his job or diminish his confidence that change is coming to Moscow, Idaho.
We are often told there is a higher purpose, a reason for high school football beyond allowing a bunch of teenagers to knock each other around, often causing injury. The game builds character, we are told. It makes young men stronger, preparing them for the responsibilities of adulthood.
Welcome to Leeward and Central Oahu, hotbed of prep football. This weekend spotlights some of the top teams statewide in games from Wahiawa to Waianae. Here's a look.

For his first three years of high school, Carl Ihenacho gravitated to the basketball court rather than the football field.

"I just never thought of playing football," Ihenacho said. "We tried to play Pop Warner; my mom didn't like it, so we just played basketball."

Every day is a family reunion at Damien Memorial High School's football practices.
The island connections run deep at Navy. The Midshipmen are led by a coach who went to high school less than a mile up Salt Lake Boulevard from Aloha Stadium. Both Ken Niumatalolo and offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper played quarterback at Hawaii.
Hawaii's influence on Division I football is more than it's ever been. A total of 101 players who graduated from local high schools dot the rosters of major D-I teams on the mainland.
Here's the good news for all you Hawaii football fans. Last year at this time, I thought UH could win 10 games in 2008.
Jim Donovan wanted to start a fire yesterday, not put one out. On the eve of the season opener for football, Hawaii had distributed around 30,000 tickets for its game tonight against Central Arkansas.
This is no ordinary Saturday. No, this is Super Saturday in prep football. With one league having Aloha Stadium all to itself -- check out the old-school Interscholastic League of Honolulu tripleheader bill on tap -- there are eight Top 10 teams in action today.
Ron Lee has relinquished play-calling duties, but will continue as the Hawaii football team's offensive coordinator, Lee told the Star-Bulletin yesterday. Quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich and offensive line coach Gordy Shaw will call the plays from the sidelines beginning with Saturday's game at Washington State.
Most of the Hawaii football team left yesterday for its longest road trip of the season. Two Warriors left for home. The majority of the UH players on the travel squad will be in unfamiliar territory over the next 11 days when they take on Washington State at Seattle's Qwest Field on Saturday and UNLV at Sam Boyd Stadium next week.
She probably won't be a Bamboola one day, but Randall Okimoto is just fine with that. As of yesterday morning, the Farrington football coach and wife Melanie were at the hospital, awaiting the birth of their first child, Mayah.
Football never really changes. It just keeps going around and around in a circle. Take that wildcat offense that's all the rage. Isn't that basically the same thing we all ran in the backyard as kids? Let your best all-around athlete have the ball and keep it, or try to do all kinds of tricky stuff off of it?
Back in his home state, Leon Wright-Jackson flashed back to his days as one of Washington's top prep athletes. "Coach Mack just told me to run like how I ran in high school," Wright-Jackson said.
Other than the arid climate, there isn't much Las Vegas and El Paso, Texas, have in common in terms of scenery. But for the Hawaii football team's week-long stay in Nevada, head coach Greg McMackin plans to create an environment similar to the Warriors' west Texas stay a year ago.
Let me tell you about the gutsiest, most instinctive play I've ever seen by a University of Hawaii football player. If you follow the Warriors, it might not surprise you that it was by Nate Jackson. The circumstances, however, may.
LAS VEGAS » The UNLV football team is 1-1 this season as it preps to host Hawaii on Saturday.
